Seattle, WA – Music Director Ludovic Morlot leads the Seattle Symphony in two momentous programs on the Delta Air Lines Masterworks Season in February.  On February 4 and 6, Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth joins the orchestra in performances of Luciano Berio’s rarely heard Sinfonia,  a post-serial classical work written for orchestra and eight amplified voices that comprises of a sonic collage of musical quotations and spoken text. The concert also features celebrated pianist Yefim Bronfman performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a continuation of the Orchestra’s two-year Beethoven cycle.  R. Strauss’ Don Juan, one of his four tone poems on the current season, will open the concert.

The Delta Air Lines Masterworks Season concerts during the following week will be dedicated to the memory of Pierre Boulez. On February 11, 13 and 14, Morlot leads the Symphony in performances of Charles Ives’ Three Places in New England. Part of an ongoing survey of the orchestral works of Charles Ives both on stage and in the recording studio, the Orchestra recently released an all-Ives recording on Seattle Symphony Media. The piece on the February concert program, along with other works by Charles Ives will appear on upcoming recordings in the coming season. Also highlighted on the concert program is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, Eroica, part of the Orchestra’s two-year Beethoven cycle. Pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet returns to perform Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 3.

The late-night [untitled] 2 concert on February 5 at 10 pm is dedicated to Robert Rauschenberg, whose Echo is permanently on view in the Samuel & Althea Stroum Grand Lobby of Benaroya Hall. The concert consists of a collection of avande-garde musical works spawned by the New York School of composers in the 1950s and ‘60s. Inspired by two of Rauschenberg’s paintings, Rebus and Erased de Kooning, Christian Wolff’s For Bob II will receive its world premiere performance during the concert. Other works on the program include Morton Feldman’s Rothko Chapel and Intersection No. 2, the score of which is partially printed on Echo, Earle Brown’s Music for Cello and Piano, and John Cage’s Living Room Music.

The Seattle Symphony’s [untitled] series presents contemporary classical music in the informal atmosphere of Benaroya Hall’s Samuel & Althea Stroum Grand Lobby. Designed to be a nontraditional concert experience in the incredible acoustic space of Benaroya Hall’s Grand Lobby. Audience members have a variety of viewing options during the performance, including seating in booths, at tables, on carpet squares and on the Grand Lobby staircases, as well on the Promenade level. The lobby will open one hour before the start of the performance. Bars operated by Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering and Events will be open during the concert.

About Ludovic Morlot

French conductor Ludovic Morlot is in his fifth season as Music Director of the Seattle Symphony. There have been many highlights during his first four seasons in this position, including an exhilarating performance at Carnegie Hall in May 2014, as reported in The New York Times: “The performance Mr. Morlot coaxed from his players was rich with shimmering colors and tremulous energy.”

During the 2015–2016 season he leads the Seattle Symphony in a wide variety of works including the launch of a two-year cycle of Beethoven symphonies and piano concertos; Berio's Sinfonia featuring vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth; Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4; Mahler’s Symphony No. 1; and Fauré’s Requiem. Complemented by the Seattle Symphony’s highly innovative series, Untuxed and [untitled], this season will also see the release of several more recordings on the Orchestra’s label, Seattle Symphony Media.

Morlot was also Chief Conductor of La Monnaie, one of Europe’s most prestigious opera houses, for three years (2012–2014). During this time he conducted several new productions including La Clemenza di Tito, Jenůfa and Pelléas et Mélisande. Concert performances, both in Brussels and Aix-en-Provence, included repertoire by Beethoven, Britten, Bruneau, Stravinsky and Webern.

Trained as a violinist, Morlot studied conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London and then at the Royal College of Music as recipient of the Norman del Mar Conducting Fellowship. Morlot was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in 2014 in recognition of his significant contribution to music. He is Chair of Orchestral Conducting Studies at the University of Washington School of Music and lives in Seattle with his wife, Ghizlane, and their two children.
